Bwindi Impenetrable NP
Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is a protected area located in southwestern Uganda, covering an area of approximately 321 square kilometers. The park was established in 1991 and was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1994, due to its high biodiversity and cultural significance. It is one of the most popular national parks in Uganda and is famous for its population of endangered mountain gorillas.
Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is home to over 400 mountain gorillas, which is almost half of the world's remaining population of this species. Visitors to the park can participate in gorilla trekking, which involves hiking through the dense forest to observe and interact with these majestic creatures in their natural habitat. Gorilla trekking permits are required and must be booked in advance.
In addition to gorillas, the park is also home to several other primate species, including chimpanzees, colobus monkeys, and baboons. The forest is also a bird-watching paradise, with over 350 species of birds recorded, including the African green broadbill, Shelley's crimsonwing, and the great blue turaco.
Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is located at an elevation ranging from 1,160 to 2,607 meters above sea level, and is characterized by steep hills, rugged terrain, and dense forest. The park is named "impenetrable" due to the thick vegetation and difficult terrain that makes it challenging to explore. However, the park offers several hiking trails for visitors, ranging from easy nature walks to more challenging multi-day hikes.
Accommodation options in and around the park include lodges and campsites, ranging from basic to luxury. The park is easily accessible by road from Kampala or other nearby towns, or by air to the nearby Kihihi or Kisoro airstrips.
Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is a unique and fascinating destination for wildlife enthusiasts, hikers, and cultural travelers alike. Gorilla trekking in particular is a once-in-a-lifetime experience that should not be missed by anyone visiting Uganda.
